Power Surge Protection
With
all the summer thunderstorms we have been experiencing lately, comes
the risk of power surges caused by lightning strikes. Where we live, there is also the risk of power outages and momentary power
interruptions due to rampant residential growth that has overtaxed the
community's power distribution capacity.
Power bars usually incorporate surge protectors to help
limit the damage to computers and peripherals from power surges and
transients
(spikes). However, the active components within the power bar (Metal
Oxide Varistors, or
MOVs), which absorb the surges and spikes, lose their effectiveness
with usage.
They can do so within about a year or so, depending upon the frequency
with
which they are called upon to absorb the excess energy. After a year or
two, they offer little or no power surge protection -- and there is no warning that they have lost their effectiveness! So, if you have an old power bar, consider replacing it with a new one soon.
